Customer Reviews:

Not my favorite4
I’ll be the first to admit that I’m a big Kenshin fan. I started reading the manga and was so hooked I had to start the anime. Fortunately, I had read before seeing the third season that Watsuki (the writer/artist for Rurouni Kenshin) was finishing the Kyoto plotline just barely ahead of the anime artists and that for the third season the anime would be different than the books otherwise I would’ve been highly disappointed by the anime. It was extremely obvious that the anime writers didn’t have a good grip on Kenshin’s character (as was obvious as well in some of the “filler” episodes in season 1), or they thought it was a great idea for a character, but wanted Kenshin to be their character instead of realizing that they were just borrowing Watsuki’s character. Still, this season does have some interesting characters and episodes. If you’re a fan who just wants more Kenshin and is willing to completely suspend your disbelief, then you’ll enjoy it. If you only want Kenshin exactly as he is in the manga with no deviation at all in character, you’re not going to enjoy this as much as you hope.

Not what was meant to be…3
Jumping from the second season’s brilliant Kyoto arc to the filler episodes of season 3 will likely seem a bit jarring to most viewers: near the end of the Kyoto arc you see Kenshin standing over the grave of someone from his past that he claims to have slain with his own sword, effectively setting up what was supposed to happen next; however, the third season completely ignores this and moves on to an increasingly inane group of stories.

The reason for this is that the next story arc in the manga was still being written at that point, so these filler episodes were created during the waiting process and became an entire season. Unfortunately, the Jinchuu (or Revenge) arc that was supposed to be season 3 never came to fruition as the episodes in this box set received such poor ratings that the show was pulled. This is especially sad considering numerous online testimonials point to the Jinchuu arc being the best of them all– no small feat considering its predecessor.

…BUT…

This review is not supposed to be a lament of what could have been. As it stands, this is what we got with regards to the regular anime ending for Kenshin– disregarding the OVAs that attempt to summarize the Jinchuu arc– and this is what must be reviewed.

Considered completely out of context of the show, this set might be considered alright. In fact, I found some enjoyment out of quite a few of the episodes. For instance, despite being a bit plodding, the Christian rebellion storyline (the first of four major ones) is pretty enjoyable at the better moments. The two that follow aren’t bad, but they aren’t great either. To be honest, the only storyline in the group that I found to be utterly garbage was the last one, which involves Feng Shui– also known as the Geomancer storyline. This group of episodes is so out of character for the entire series that it can hardly be watched without feeling a bit of disgust.

While I found a little enjoyment in it, should you come into this season expecting another Kyoto-like execution, you’ll be severely disappointed. This stuff was never written by the original author of the manga and feels very much out of place at times, especially during the last two storylines. Furthermore, the ending leaves very much to be desired: it feels like a big letdown after the buildup over the entire series, which is all I’ll say regarding it in this review.

So, basically, it comes down to this: if you are a completionist, go ahead and get this one (as you will anyway :p), but keep in mind that it nowhere near lives up to the rest of the series. Beyond that, if you are able to suspend your disbelief pretty well, you can possibly find some enjoyment from this season as I did. Otherwise, it’s probably best to stay away and consider the anime complete at the end of the Kyoto arc.

If you want the complete story as it was supposed to happen, then read the manga– I believe books 19-28. In lieu of that, you can watch the three Samurai X OVAs: Trust, Betrayal, and Reflection. The first two summarize the portion of the manga that deals with Kenshin’s Battosai days, while the latter includes some of the Jinchuu arc as part of an overall flashback on the series from Kaoru’s view. Note, however, that the OVAs are brief in their treatment of the final storyline, and they also trade the goofball tone of the series for a very serious and almost depressing atmosphere.

  • Set in the Oxfordshire countryside at the end of the 19th Century, this rich, funny and emotional series follows the daily lives of farm-workers, craftsmen and gentry in two contrasting communities: Lark Rise, the small hamlet, gently holding onto the past and Candleford, the neighboring market town, bustling in to the future. When young Laura Timmins leaves Lark Rise for a job at the local post of

BRITISH PERIOD PERFECTION–SOMETHING FOR EVERY TYPE OF DRAMA ADDICT5
English country life could never have been as poetic, pictorial, and enchanting as this dramatization of the lives of those living in and around the two 1880’s towns of Lark Rise and Candleford. Even the DVD’s music puts a sanguine sugarcoating on the period. All of this is to the delight of the viewer of this masterfully done TV series sure to endear any North American who has a tender video heart toward Victorian Britain. Perhaps, consider it a British mutation of “Little House on the Prairie” or “The Waltons.”

This set of 4 DVDs, 10 episodes totaling 582 minutes, is actually a 9 1/2+ hour saga (continuing panorama of human relationship) of the commoner village and the more sophisticated Candleford. The short 8-mile separation allows for much intermingling, bigotry, conflict, forbidden love, political and economic interaction. It is not a family saga, not a nobility bloodline dramatization, but a saga of struggles and lifestyles of different kinds of personalities, each caught in their own born-into world, and interacting with another different, and not always understood, class of folk.

Darling Laura Timmins (Olivia Hallinan), oldest child of a Lark Rise family, is sent off to Candleford to learn the trade of postmistress. She is the spark caught between the two towns (sometimes world’s different.) Her mentor, Dorcas (Julia Sawalha), has a personal secret. There is the expected, token-gentry, rich, Squire family, Sir Timothy (Ben Miles)& Lady Adelaide (Oliva Grant). The rest of the regular cast (at least 20 appearing in all 10 episodes) is an assortment of either the die-hard, disheveled, working class or the Candleford higher class, but yet short of nobility range. It is the individuals that make this spectacular (or fill in your own highest superlative.)

One episode travels into the next with carryover from earlier material. If you have the time, it’s best to watch it as a near 10-hour feature production. What a horrible time the original TV viewers must have had waiting for the next installment. Each episode has multiple plots so it is impossible to break down the episodes into short summaries. And with carryover from one episode to another, it’s more like moving to Lark Rise or Candleford and living with the good people (and the bad). A delightful scenic experience even Disney has never matched.

Ah, but the folks you will meet. Dr. Seuss eat your heart out. Queenie (Linda Bassett), an old bee keeper, is married to ole Twister (Karl Johnson) and both will make you laugh and cry, perhaps in the same scene. Pearl (Matilda Ziegler) and Ruby (Victoria Hamilton) own Pratt’s General Drapers & Haberdashers. They represent the best of fashion and fitness, just ask them, as they spurn much gossip and controversy. Thomas (Mark Heap) is a postal delivery man who helps keep Christianity alive and aloud. Portly Caroline (Dawn French) a mother with her man off to sea, divides her time between frivolity and beer and would make a fine Viking helpmate. And dear, dear old housemaid Zillah (a standing O for Liz Smith), is the life and death of every party–a quirkiness totally lovable. Assistant gamekeeper Phillip and melodean-playing Alfie vie for Laura’s affection, while her ma, Emma (Claudie Blakley), and pa, Robert (Brendan Coyle) try in vain to keep sanity to the comings and goings of life from “Lark Rise to Candleford.”

Oh and more, locations and sets to die for a vacation in. Costumes to dazzle, delight, and disgust, depending upon the event. Every emotion you have ever felt in your past will be repeated sometime throughout this English town saga. The adapted books by Flora Thompson have never been read by this reviewer, but I can’t imagine them being as fine as this TV series (and I’m a book lover). A superb British cast has perfected this story.

Another stellar period drama from BBC5
I have been waiting for this series to be released here in the United States, and watched it within two days. I have to admit that I have yet to read the book (of the same name) by Flora Thompson that this series is based on (I plan to do so soon). The book is said to be semi-autobiographical but I can’t really comment on how faithful the series is to the book since I’ve yet to read it. My review as such will be confined to the BBC drama.

The story follows the lives of the inhabitants of the poor, sleepy hamlet of Lark Rise and the more affluent and snooty inhabitants of Candleford during the last decades of the 19th century (sometime in the 1880s I believe). The central character Laura Timmins (Olivia Hallinan) is a young girl from Lark Rise who is sent by her parents to work as an assistant to the postmistress, the capable and sensible Dorcas Lane (a brilliant Julia Sawalha). Initially Laura balks at the more restrained and formal way of life in Candleford, and is humiliated by the way some of the town’s more snobbish inhabitants (such as the Pratt sisters, Pearl and Ruby, credibly portrayed by Matilda Ziegler and Victoria Hamilton) look down upon her, but she gradually finds satisfaction and a measure of happiness in her job and new surroundings, and comes to develop a true understanding of the inhabitants of both Lark Rise and Candleford, in all their complexities. Julia Sawalha is amazing in her role as the kind postmistress who acts as a sort of mentor to young Laura, and whose own life seems deceptively straightforward, despite some undercurrents, brought on by her close friendship with town squire, Sir Timothy Midwinter (Ben Miles) who is married to a city girl, the cool and composed Lady Adelaide (Olivia Grant).

To delve too much into the plot would detract from the viewer’s pleasure, and so all I will say is that this excellent series has everything to recommend it – a wonderful score, beautiful cinematography of the lush English countryside, and plenty of human drama, dealing with social issues, marital strife, forbidden desires, love across the different social classes, friendship, and lots of good old-fashioned humor. The ensemble cast is excellent and a delight to watch, engaging viewer’s interest from the first episode till the last of the season, and I was sorry to see it come to an end. Luckily for fans, there is Lark Rise to Candleford: The Complete Season Two, and Season 3 will hopefully be available on DVD soon.

Perfection in Period Drama!5
I was searching amazon for a new period drama, found this one, and decided to purchase it based on the reviews and the quality of actors — including Julia Sawalha (Pride & Prejudice and Cranford), Brendan Coyle (North & South), Ben Miles (The Forsyte Saga), Dawn French and Claudie Blakely. I was not disappointed. It was absolutely fabulous and I didn’t want it to end. In fact, I’ve watched it a second time since purchasing it a month ago. I cannot wait until they release series two in the U.S. (it’s already available in Europe). If you’re thinking of buying it, don’t hesitate. It’s well worth the $42, ranking up there with P&P, N&S, Cranford, The Forsyte Saga, Sense & Sensibility (Emma Thompson version, which I happen to like better than the recent Andew Davies version), Emma (Gwyneth Paltrow version), Persuasion (Amanda Root version), etc. (I love period drama and own just about every one released). What better way to spend a rainy Sunday afternoon? Enjoy!

Buy and Support Tarzan!5
I can only hope at least a million people buy this Tarzan DVD set. I pre-ordered it a couple months ago when I first saw it was available to order. As a child I watched these on Sunday afternoons. They were a mainstay for any kids TV diet in the 1950s and 1960s. I have to say that after dining on the majority of Tarzan movies my taste became partial to Johnny Weismueller. The fact that he was an Olympian swimmer, had the best Tarzan yodel, and his acting seemed to fit a kid raised in the jungle. It was a blast watching him wrestle crocodiles and lions and call elephants to tramble the bad guys. We can only hope that interest in this set may prompt them to release the rest of his Tarzan movies. I for one loved them all, even if the special effects were a little hokey sometimes. By todays standards the F/X will seem comical, but still fun to watch. This set has the best production values and casting of all the Tarzan movies.

SIMPLY SUPERB!5
I’ve been waiting for these films to be released on DVD ever since I got my DVD player in January, 2001. I was born in 1954 and grew up watching them on TV. Tarzan was without a doubt my favorite hero and Johnny Weissmuller was Tarzan. One of the biggest thrills of my youth was meeting Johnny when he came to my hometown in 1967. He gave me two photos of himself which I still have. The packaging of this set is excellent, first class all the way. The documentary is very interesting. I only wish that Johnny Sheffield could have been interviewed. It was great to see Cheeta still going strong at 72 years old. The theatrical trailers were fun to watch, and the other “special features” were great, also. I especially enjoyed the short documentary shot during the filming of “Tarzan Finds A Son” at Silver Springs, Florida. Before I purchased the set, I was concerned about the picture quality of the six feature films. But, when I watched them, I was very pleased. After years of seeing them on TV, it was good to view them via the high resolution of the DVD format. When and if the six RKO Tarzan/Weissmuller films are released on DVD, I pray that Warner Video will do the honors.

“Lord of the Jungle is Johnny Weissmuller (Tarzan)”5
Finally and about time, the release of Johnny Weissmuller on DVD in the role that he was born to play TARZAN! ~ loaded with many “special features” entitled “Tarzan:Silver Screen King of the Jungle”[introduction/studio interest in Tarzan/developing the story/casting Tarzan/casting Jane/production begins/Tarzan and His Mate/the Tarzan yell/Cheeta/backlot zoo/Tarzan escapes/Tarzan Finds a Son!/Tarzan’s Secret Treasure/Tarzan’s New York Adventure/final thoughts/End Credits ~ plus vintage vault treasures featuring Jimmy Durante as “Schnarzan the Conqueror”!!(from Hollywood Party) and a real treasure with MGM on location featuring Johnny Weissmuller, Tom Mix, Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, Mickey Rooney, Jackie Cooper featured in “Rodeo Dough” with Kokomo the Bull ~ all 6 Weissmuller/O’Sullivan Tarzan theatrical trailers.

After years of taping these off the local television stations and then when AMC ran the segments a few years ago with fairly good prints, I’d given up of ever seeing the Tarzan films on DVD ~ but here they are in a beautifully packaged box set on four discs ~
“TARZAN THE APE MAN” (1932) featuring Weissmuller, O’Sullivan, Neil Hamilton, C. Aubrey Smith and directed by W.S. Van Dyke.
“TARZAN AND HIS MATE” (1934) with Weissmuller, O’Sullivan, Neil Hamilton, Paul Cavanaugh and directed by Bernard H. Hyman (this is my favorite Tarzan film – story and action sequences were way ahead of their time)
“TARZAN ESCAPES” (1936) with Weissmuller, O’Sullivan, John Buckler, Benita Hume, William Henry and directed by Richard Thorpe.
“TARZAN FINDS A SON” (1939) with Weissmuller, O’Sullivan, Johnny Sheffield, Ian Hunter, Henry Stephenson, Henry Wilcoxon, Laraine Day and directed by Richard Thorpe (one of the best in the early series)
“TARZAN’S SECRET TREASURE” (1941) with Weissmuller, O’Sullivan, Johnny Sheffield, Reginald Owen, Tom Conway, Philip Dorn, Barry Fitzgerald (one of my favorite Irish Actors – with Bing Crosby and later with John Wayne) and directed by Richard Thorpe.
“TARZAN’S NEW YORK ADVENTURE” (1942) with Weissmuller, O’Sullivan, Johnny Sheffield, Charles Bickford, Chill Wills (Francis the Talking Mule fame), Paul Kelly, Virginia Grey and directed by Richard Thorpe(which Tarzan and the rest of the cast are completely clothed in a civilized world of crooks, trying to take Boy away from Jane and Tarzan) all under the watchful eye of Edgar Rice Burroughs.

Hopefully Warner Brothers will release the next group of Weissmuller films he did for RKO Studios ~ the same quality and special features for those six films would be a welcome addition ~ just think a new generation of fans are on the brink of discovering the true Lord of the Jungle ~ TARZAN(in the guise of Johnny Weissmuller)…gotta love it!

Enough about the price drop complaining, review the product!4
Ok, I watched this set I borrowed from a friend and the picture isn’t as bad as everyone says it is. Somewhere someone said they felt like they were watching a VHS tape…give me a break! While they obviously could have done a better job cleaning these up, they are for sure better than the DVD versions. But it’s still a decent transfer…I’m sure there they will eventually be completely remastered.

As for those of you complaining about the price droppings…have you noticed the significant drop overall in blu-ray pricing? Now the blu-ray is becoming more mainstream, the prices are coming down! If there are no advantages to pre-ordering, then don’t get it! Everyone has had a situation where they paid for something and later saw it cheaper and lost a few bucks. Amazon is still cheaper than going out to Best Buy or Wal-mart and getting it. Factor in that the majority of Amazon users don’t have to pay tax and can have the items shipped to you for FREE, then that is even more in savings. So again, if you don’t like it, don’t buy it!

Rocky on blu4
Finally, the Rocky set has made it to blu ray. I have been a fan of Sylvester Stallone since I was a kid.(I am now 39.) I already have the complete Rambo collection on blu ray and it is great to finally have the Rockys.
The quallity of each movies are much better than the previous dvds. The sound is superb. I have a 76 inch flatscreen tv and surround sound and I’ll tell you the quallity of the blu rays make me feel like I’m watching all of them in the theater again. Awesome! If you have a blu ray player, buy these. Much better than dvd.
If I was to complain about any one thing it would be this- Where are the Director’s cut of each one? That is why it is getting 4 stars out of 5. The movies themselves and the blu rays are 5 stars.

Thank you Amazon for very fast delivery. 5 stars

Rocky: The Undisputed Collection5
This is a great buy, the picture doesen’t look that much better then the dvd but if you don’t own it yet and you have a Blu-Ray it’s worth the money. It’s also cheaper then the dvd collection in stores. If you have any other question please comment and i’d gladly reply.

Customer Reviews:

great rabbit style vibrator5
I bought this for my wife. She has several toys including one other rabbit vibrator but the butterfly vibrator is her favorite. The rotating shaft has significant girth. The vibrator is powered by 4 aa batteries which provides the shaft with a strong rotation. The vibrating butterfly is large and hugs the entire clitoral area. The intense vibration of the butterfly never fails to bring her satisfaction. Additionally, the way the toy lights up provides an erotic visual appeal.

Another great season!5
Season five of Star trek voyager was a great one.
Seven’s charecter continues to develop and some new species are introduced. The season finale also has an excellent cliffhanger.

Here are the episode synopses:

Night
Voyager enters a region of space where there are no stars. It would take them 2 years to cross it but discover a shortcut
owned by someone unwilling to share it.

Drone
When Seven and the Doctor are brought onto Voyager during an emergency beam in, Seven’s Borg implants fuse with
the doctor’s mobile emitter creating a 29th century ’superborg’

Extreme Risk
After Tom Paris tests the new “Delta Flyer” it is revealed that Torres has been engaging very risky behavior.

In The Flesh
Voyager discovers a large space station with species 8472 on it. They have created a holographic recreation of
Starfleet Academy and are disguising themselves as humans. Janeway suspects that they may be planning an invasion

Once Upon a Time
After Ensign Wildman goes missing, Neelix helps comfort her daughter using a holographic recreation of Talaxian fairy tales.

15 years after Voyager crash landed on an ice planet killing all but two crewmembers, they steal a Borg technology that may
enable them to send a message back in time to warn about the cause of the crash.

Infinite Regress
Seven starts to take on the personalities of individuals whom she assimilated while she was a Borg drone.

Nothing Human
After Torres is attacked by an alien parasite, she must rely on the mind of one of her enemies to help remove the parasite from her body.

events leading to his punishment

Counterpoint
Voyager is stopped after entering spaced owned by a xenophobic alien race.

The doctor suspects that someone may have deleted part his short-term memory.

Bride of Chaotica!
An alien attacks the ship believing a holodeck battle simulation to be real. Janeway then creates a character for herself to fix the problem

Gravity
When Paris and Tuvok send a distress signal to Voyager after crash landing on a planet, a gravity well prevents the
message from reaching its destination.

Bliss
Voyager discovers a wormhole they believe is leading to Earth, but Seven suspects that it is an elaborate trap and no one believes her.

An alien offers to help Voyager’s crew solve some problems but afterwards the price is way too steep.

The ship’s captain reveals that they were pulled into the Delta Quadrant by the caretaker just like Voyager was. They then try to stop the aliens, which are now attacking both of their ships.

Star Trek fans will love this!

Another strong season for VOYAGER4
STAR TREK: VOYAGER is an unusual show in that its worst seasons were the earliest. Virtually all shows ever made were better in their first half than in the second half, but VOYAGER is one of the few exceptions. There are two reasons for the dramatic improvement in the show over its final four seasons. First, an increasing amount of serial content. No doubt part of this was the result of a growing number of other shows on at the same time with serial formats. Whatever the cause, as more and more elements carried over from one episode to later episodes, the more interesting the series became. The second reason for the improvement in the show was the emergence of Seven of Nine as the show’s most compelling character. Very shortly after her introduction at the start of Season Four, Jeri Ryan’s Seven of Nine became by far the most crucial character in most of the best episodes. VOYAGER did not, in fact, feel at all like the same show after Seven’s appearance on the series. And as with the other three seasons featuring Seven, most of the best episodes on the show were Seven-centric.

Still, Season Five did not have as many truly excellent episodes as Season Four. On the other hand, it did not have nearly as man weak episodes as Seasons One through Three and Season Six. The two-part “Dark Frontier” is one of the exceptions, providing two of the most exciting episodes in the entire run of VOYAGER (again, a pair of episodes focused on Seven of Nine, as she temporarily returns to the Borg, learning that perhaps her having become a member of the crew of Voyager was part of a Borg plan). Still, the main virtue of Season Five is its persistent excellence, rather than its flashes of greatness.

There are some fun guest appearances in Season Five. Jason Alexander made one of his first post-SEINFELD appearances in the late season episode “Think Tank” (yet another Seven of Nine episode). John Savage appears in the end of the season episode “Equinox” (the second half of which would start Season Six). I did have a remarkable experience over a two-day period during which I encountered character actor Mark Harelik in three different shows. I rewatched an episode of the great, great series PUSHING DAISIES entitled “Bitches,” in which the owner of a string of puppy stores, played by Harelik, attempts to clone the world’s most perfect dog (“man’s best, best friend”). Then I saw him on VOYAGER in “Counterpoint,” one of the best episodes of Season Five, as Devore Inspector Kashyk. His role is one of the finest guest appearances in all of VOYAGER, as he plays a Devore officer who may or may not be attempting to defect from his people and who may or may not be trying to help Voyager. He and Janeway were really great together. Finally, I watched the second episode of the new series ELI STONE, and Harelik appeared as a defense attorney. For a brief period of time he seemed to be everywhere I looked.

All in all, a good season. But I agree with all those who think Paramount has priced these sets outrageously high. I own a very large number of shows on DVD, but not a single box set of any Star Trek series. Instead, I rely on Netflix. I strongly encourage everyone to refuse to purchase these sets at their current pricing level. Current technology makes the production of these sets extremely cheap, far cheaper than it cost to make old VHS tapes. And with little or no fees to be paid for use of music (something that represents a real expense for shows like NORTHERN EXPOSURE or SMALLVILLE) there is little in the way of overhead. There is a word for what Paramount is doing with the Star Trek DVDs and that word is “gouging.” They are gouging fans of the show by forcing people to pay extravagant prices. There is simply no excuse for any box set to cost more than around $42 after discount. I can understand a show like ALLY MCBEAL costing more (if it ever makes it onto DVD) because of the licensing fees for its heavy use of music, but not a show like VOYAGER. The most I can say is that they have lowered the price somewhat. But it is still way, way too expensive. The sad part is that if they dropped the cost of the show, they would almost certainly make more money by greatly increased sales.

Paris Reduced in Rank, ‘Seven’ Tempted by the Borg4
Less than one year following the concluding season of “Star Trek: The Next Generation” in 1994, executive producer/writer Rick Berman, along with Michael Piller and Jeri Taylor, created a fourth television series based upon the “Star Trek” universe originally created by Gene Roddenberry (1921-1991) in the 1960’s. This fourth television series, entitled “Voyager” (which is the name of the Federation of Planets starship used in the series), first aired in January 1995, and ran for seven seasons until it concluded in May 2001. Because “Voyager” aired initially in the month of January (instead of the traditional September), only 16 episodes were filmed for the first season. The succeeding six other seasons had 26 episodes each, for a grand total of 172 episodes for the entire series.

Unlike the previous three “Star Trek” television series, which (for the most part) took place within the bounds of the Federation of Planets (or in nearby sovereign areas of space, such as the Klingon Empire or the Romulan Empire) in the Alpha Quadrant, the starship Voyager is hurled tens of thousands of light-years from home into the previously unknown and unexplored Delta Quadrant, which is located at the far side of the Milky Way Galaxy. Even while traveling at warp 8 (the fastest safe speed that a typical starship can travel), it would take Voyager several decades to return to Earth. Hence, the series focuses on the survival of Voyager’s Starfleet crew, who are completely isolated and unable to even maintain normal communications with Earth, as well as the crew’s ultimate desire to find a way home faster than their ship is capable of doing. Also, along the way, Voyager adopts a few Delta Quadrant natives.

The primary cast members of the fourth season of “Voyager” include Captain Catherine Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), Commander Chakotay (Robert Beltran), the half-Klingon Lt. B’Elanna Torres (Roxann Dawson), Lt. Thomas Eugene Paris (Robert Duncan McNeill), Delta Quadrant native (Talaxian) Neelix (Ethan Phillips), the holographic Emergency Medical Holographic Program (a.k.a., “The Doctor”, played by Robert Picardo), the Vulcan Lt. Cmdr. Tuvok (Tim Russ), Ensign Harry Kim (Garrett Wang) and the former Borg drone Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan). Voyager’s fifth season begins with the episode “Night”, in which Voyager has been traveling through a void that may take them 2 years to traverse and the crew is slowly going crazy. The ship is attacked by three alien ships built by natives of the seeming void; but when Voyager is assisted by another alien ship that is dumping deadly radioactive waste into the void, Voyager’s crew realizes what is happening to the void’s natives.

During the fifth season of “Voyager”, Seven of Nine becomes an accidental mother to an advanced drone named One (J. Paul Boehmer) in episode “Drone”, B’Elanna continues her ongoing struggles with her Klingon half, Kim from the future attempts to save Voyager from total destruction in episode “Timeless”, Paris is punished for trying to save a watery world in episode “Thirty Days”, the holographic doctor is plagued by a difficult decision in episode “Latent Image” and Capt. Janeway battles the Borg Queen (Susanna Thompson) in the two-part episode “Dark Frontier”. The best fifth-season episodes, in order of airdate, include “Night”, “Drone” (one of the best “Voyager” episodes ever), “Extreme Risk”, “In the Flesh” (the return of species 8472), “Timeless”, “Thirty Days”, “Counterpoint”, “Latent Image”, “Bride of Chaotica!” (aliens visit Paris’ holodeck program), “Gravity”, “Bliss”, “Dark Frontier (Parts 1 and 2)”, “Juggernaut”, “11:59″, “Relativity”, “Warhead” and the season finale “Equinox, Part 1″. The least memorable fifth-season episodes include “Once Upon a Time”, “The Disease” and “The Fight”.

Overall, I rate the fifth season of “Voyager” with 4 out of 5 stars since it was a slightly weaker season than its predecessors, but did have some very good episodes.

Amazon.com
After Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) spent much of Voyager’s fourth season trying to resist the pull of the Borg, and just when the tide of battle seemed to be turning, she returns to the Collective in a memorable confrontation with the Borg Queen (Susanna Thompson) in the centerpiece story of the fifth season, the two-part “Dark Frontier.” The Borg also factor into the nightmare-laden “Infinite Regress” as well as “Drone,” in which a strange Borg-human-EMH hybrid teaches Seven the experience of parenthood, of sorts. Species 8472 returns as well, in another of the season’s gritty episodes, “In the Flesh.”

The series’ historic 100th episode “Timeless” goes back in history as Kim (Garrett Wang) and Chakotay (Robert Beltran) try to repair a past mistake (directed by and guest-starring TNG’s LeVar Burton), and in another dizzying episode, “Relativity,” Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) is spending her first day on Voyager when she discovers Seven, who has traveled back in time to prevent an act of sabotage. It was also a good season for buddies Kim and Paris (Robert Duncan MacNeill). In addition to “Timeless,” Kim takes center stage in “The Disease” when he embarks on a dangerous romance. Paris is thrown in the brig in “Thirty Days,” and his Captain Proton holodeck simulation goes haywire in “Bride of Chaotica!” In “Course Oblivion,” a ship wedding is the prelude to a deadly displacement for the entire crew.

It wasn’t all slam-bang action. The Doctor’s (Robert Picardo) buried memories lead to an ethical conflict in “Latent Image,” and he and Seven (the two most consistently interesting crew members) dabble in the most unlikely of romances in one of the series’ most touching and memorable episodes “Someone to Watch Over Me.” Also, Jason Alexander (then in Seinfeld) guest-stars as a scheming alien in “Think Tank.” Voyager didn’t always close its season with a cliffhanger, but in “Equinox, Part 1″ an attempt to aid another Federation starship in the Delta Quadrant uncovers a threat that might destroy them both.

The bonus features include a season recap, crew profiles of Voyager’s resident couple, B’Elanna Torres and Paris, a 19-minute spotlight on the makeup process (Neelix was created as a combination of Timon and Pumbaa in The Lion King), and “The Borg Queen Speaks,” in which Susanna Thompson discusses the difficulties of shooting and how she had originally auditioned for the same role in Star Trek: First Contact. –David Horiuchi
